We Trash Lassies are in full swing on preparations for several big springtime fundraising events.  It’s the 20th anniversary of the Nancy Davis Foundation’s Race to Erase MS.  This year is packed with fantastic reasons to celebrate and Heidi and I are honored to be hosting the orange carpet celebrity poster autographs again this year.

FIRST- In twenty years this organization has been responsible for groundbreaking advancements in the cure and treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.  Never before have researchers been so close to a cure in so short of time.  If all foundations seeking to eradicate disease were so effective and diligent our world would be a much healthier place.  When doctors diagnosed Nancy Davis 21 years ago, and told her to go home and expect to become incapacitated she started to fight!  And because of that unyielding spirit this disease may soon be erased.  NANCY YOU ROCK!

SECOND- This year we are honoring Sharon and Jack Osborne.  Their honesty and commitment to MS education has greatly advanced public awareness. THANK YOU

THIRD- Our musical headliner this year is the incomparable Sir Elton John! WOW

Spring is the time to “Tackle Your Mess Monster”

Beware all who enter here!  If kids, husband, relatives, friends and you are in the habit of coming into the house and dropping personal items on kitchen counters, the floor, on top of tables or furniture, STOP THEM IN THEIR TRACKS!  The single most important way to keep your home clutter free and organized is to create a DROP ZONE at your front door.

Place a standing coat rack next to the primary entry point.  If space is an issue, hang hooks right on the wall.  Have one for every member of the family… including pets!  It’s the perfect place to drape a leash, harness and doggie sweaters.  Hooks allows everyone to keep a jacket easily accessible.  More importantly it provides the perfect solution to keeping outerwear off the floor and furniture.

Use open bins or cubicles to hold hand carry items.  These containers can range from plastic boxes to built-in wood cabinetry.  Be sure they are large enough to hold a backpack, shopping bag or briefcase.  Hang a corkboard, print out a monthly calendar and display the DAILY-DOs.  Show each persons schedule, commitments and appointments, as well as sporting events and family activities.  Now everyone can see what is taking place everyday of the week.

Use office file separators as individual notification slots.  Office gear gives you the ability to distribute party invitations, personal notes, and paperwork specific to each family member.  Keep one communal slot open for paper and notes that everyone needs to see.

It will take time to adjust to a designated drop zone, but once the family has mastered the habit they will be more likely to keep personal items in their assigned space.  And once you start…you will never know how you lived without it!  Just imagine your home without books and packs lying about furniture, having a central information center to keep track of games, field trips and events, and only one location in the house speckled with clutter.  This is one sure fire way to take control of your mess.
